Little Light

After adopting my son last year, I wanted to explore my process of becoming a mother, and how things come to matter. My animated video, Little Light, is a series of watercolour paintings that document the laboured process of making a paintbrush from a clip of my new son’s hair, and then using it to generate the painted frames.

I have tried to focus upon the emotions, feeling and bonds that originate from within the body, and are then nurtured through everyday activities. The soundtrack for the film is adapted for music box from a poem I wrote in a typeface I drew. Wherever there is a missing letter in the typeface, it has been replaced by a hole-punched black space. The poem, printed out, is possible to 'play' through a music box, each gap becoming sound.

I loved making this work. The slow labour of drawing and painting each frame helped make lockdown more bearable. I am planning on developing it into a bigger piece over the course of next year.
