The film, set in a small town in post-Civil War Spain focuses on a young girl named Ana. ‘Spirit’ is  a mesmerizing portrait of a child’s inner life as she becomes haunted by memory of attending a travelling movie show of... 'Frankenstein' .  Erice's film also subtly invokes the dark oppressive political atmosphere of the time as the effects of Franco's victory extend out into all aspects of Spanish life.
