Metro Lines. Factory sides. Backyard gates. Newcastle’s graffiti culture permeates the city. Its members strive to get their names up in more  locations than anyone else, creating artworks ambitious in both placement and design. The scene thrives on Warwick Street, home to the vibrant, ever-changing walls of Biscuit Tin Studios and spray-paint shop Colours.

Paint On A Wall is by artist and film-maker Susie Davies, a fine art student at Newcastle University. A documentary delving beneath the surface of the North East’s graffiti scene, it follows the experiences of graffiti writers and street artists through interviews and footage of painting in action. From long-standing veteran of the scene, Mr Zee, to the younger crew, DVS, a range of voices reveal their undying passion for the high-risk, fast-paced artform.

The event will feature a post-film discussion on graffiti, chaired by Professor Richard Clay, art historian and creator of the 2015 BBC4 documentary A Brief History of Graffiti. The discussion will give the audience a chance to ask questions and express any personal perspectives.

Works by graffiti writers will also be on exhibition; get an up-close taste of their talent.

The event is free but spaces are limited so booking is essential.
