DAMO SUZUKI playing with: ROBIN STOREY, MARK SPYBEY (Reformed Faction), OSCAR RUIZ FERNANDEZ (Onoma) and CHRISTIAN ALDERSON (Helictite)

+ support from Earthling Society

Damo Suzuki (previously lead singer of Can, the band that influenced pretty much everyone who came after them) has been on his “never ending tour” since 1983, travelling from city to city across the world on his own and connecting with local musicians (which he calls ‘sound carriers’) to create music that’s completely unrehearsed and improvised on the spot. Most of the time the musicians will not have met Damo before, and at times they will not even have met each-other (as is the case with some of the musicians involved in this show).

Do not miss your chance to see this 20th century legend in action – I’ve seen him before and he was jaw-droppingly good, so I felt I had to bring him to Newcastle, and we’re very lucky he was available for this. His control of understanding of rhythm must be heard to be believed, and his wonderful recordings with Can are but a fraction of what he’s capable of.

Damo is internationally revered as a master of free-improvisation, and you can never know quite what to expect from his shows. This time, for his Newcastle show, he will team up with some fantastic musicians, well proven on both the local and international scenes (in some cases).

Firstly, Robin Storey, co-founder of Zoviet France, no less, and also currently a multimedia artist going by the name of Rapoon.
Mark Spybey, also previously of Zoviet France, and who plays with Robin in Reformed Faction, has previously played with Damo Suzuki as well.
Oscar Ruiz Fernandez – one half of local upstarts Onoma, who have impressed with they’re driving electronic-based music, and who have played some excellent shows recently, among them the last Road to Rimin all dayer at the Tyne.
And finally, on drums, Christian Alderson, who’ll be familiar to many of you as the excellent drummer from local talents Helictite, and who also plays with Unit Ama and The Long Lonesome Go.

There will also be support from North Westerners Earthling Society.

So: The Star & Shadow Cinema, doors open 8pm, £7 members /£8 non-members. ‘Nuff said, I would think.

I’m attaching links to all the participants’ music, but they are by no means an indication of what the music will be like on the night. In fact, it’s guaranteed to be totally different:
