***WHO?***
Castanets is the musical project of San Diego’s Raymond Raposa, generally considered one of the earliest proponents of the Freak Folk - or New Weird America - movement from the past 5-6 years.
He has recently also toured with Jana Hunter (who is signed to Devendra Banhart’s label) and Peter and the Wolf. It would be a disservice, however, to simply lump this guy together with the Freak-Folk movement or define him as “Folk” when he manages to swing from a kind of Gothic Country to Folk, and then to minimalism and dark, drawn out and emotionally charged finales that don’t even resemble the song in its inception. And to inaugurate the release of his new album he’ll be playing with a six piece band, to give him a juicier, epic sound, with a taste of pop!
Supporting Castanets will be Lazarus, who has been touring with Castanets for a while and has previously played with Explosions In The Sky(!!). Tiny Mix Tapes had this to say about him:"A rare and beautiful opposition to what most audiences expect."
Lazarus will only be playing with Castanets on a select few dates on this tour, so don't miss your chance to see him.
Add Hapsburg Crow (previously Hapsburg Braganza) to the mix, and you can expect a night of spine-tingling eerie beauty that will suck into the sort of murky atmosphere you'd normally only find in a swamp (but in a good way).
"Listen to it. You're in for one hell of a dream." Pop Matters
