A night of folk extravaganza, with a variety of folk from both sides of the Atlantic, with:

MV & EE

+ The Doozer

+ Cath & Phil Tyler

MV & EE

MV & EE are Matt Valentine and Erika Elder, who are signed to Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! Label (Sunburned Hand of the Man, Hush Arbors, Magik Markers and more) and have collaborated with J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) and Chris Corsano among many others.

They combine Indian raga style composition with Appalachian folk and post-psychedelic electrical experimentalism, using Western and Eastern acoustic instruments amplified and augmented with effects to create at times an irresistably sludgy, sluggish, dragging sound that feels like a swamp creature dragging its feet along the ground, like Neil Young slowed down to a drone.

Yet can just as easily switch to spaced-out heavenly guitar plucking with sitar-like drawn-out twangs that evoke imagery of some nostalgic lost 60s Americana.

REVIEWS

“It’s a killer, it’s a masterpiece killer” – Strangeglue.com

“The herb and the everyone’s-an-artist spirit remain, but -- thankfully -- it’s encapsulated in an appreciation for the last 40 years of rebellious music." – Dusted

"...a true Americana that is rooted solely in good vibes…” – Foxy Digitalis

+The Doozer

Support comes from Cambridge’s The Doozer, an up-and-coming talent in the new breed of strange homemade psychedelichally inflectd British folk that seems to be popping up in different places across the country faster and faster.

You’d do well to catch this guy before he becomes bigger (in status rather than physically), and before some Wire smartass groups all these exciting new bands under some genre brand like New Weird England or something like that.

+ Cath & Phil Tyler

And finally, with no need for introductions, Cath & Phil Tyler will be with us to complete a night of hallucinatory folk. If you live in Newcastle you’ll know who they are, but just in case you don’t, here are some reviews:

"Folk moves into a new era with Cath and Phil. Their combination of earthiness and grit, raw yet heartfelt and beautiful singing and immaculate playing makes this one of the most exciting and most moving albums I've heard in a long while." - Fiona Talkington, ‘Late Junction’, BBC Radio 3

“The twining harmonies…recall the heyday of English pastoral folk song” - The Wire

“Dumb Supper is one of those rare modern folk albums that will find a home in both the longstanding ‘traditional’ music community and among those attracted to the form's more experimental and lo-fi possibilities….It’s a weird looking-glass effect many folk fans will be familiar with: the straighter you play it, the stranger it gets…Shirley Collins always understood this and so do Cath & Phil Tyler.” - Frances Morgan, Plan B Magazine
