IT'S NUN TIME

The beat boom of the 1960s and the Riot Grrrl rebellions of the early nineties combine when The Nuns play the Trash Shack on January 23.  Formed from ex-members of Huggy Bear, the Headcoatees, Curve, Echobelly and Mambo Taxi,  The Nuns are an all-female, all-out entertainment assault dedicated to keeping the spirit of the Monks alive.

Those who saw the documentary "Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback" at the Star and Shadow last year, will know the story of five American GIs stationed in Germany who shaved the tops of their heads, called themselves the Monks and honed a style of music that Nuns guitarist Delia calls “nihilistic, dark-wave garage punk”.

Fans include the Fall's Mark E Smith, John Spencer Blues Explosion and members of Faust - the Monks are often credited with kicking off the Krautrock explosion. The women in the Nuns were the biggest fans of all, and since organist Andrea (formerly of Mambo Taxi) and Banjo Debbie (Curve, Echobelly) formed the band, they've played sell-out houses across Europe.

This is crushingly rhythmic rock and roll, and a great hedonistic night out for garage rock fans and girl-powered riot revolutionaries.
