The Star and Shadow Cinema is very excited to be hosting music shows and films screenings as part of the AV festival, which has an incredibly interesting programme this year - we recommend you to go to as much of it as possible!
The programme can be divided into 3 parts: the music event, the slow cinema weekend (with artist films), and the slow cinema series.
The things we are MASSIVELY EXCITED about, and that we would strongly recommend you to come to, are:
- Ben Rivers' latest film, on Sun 11 March, 11am: TWO YEARS AT SEA (2011) + Q&A.
Ben Rivers is one of the most interesting visual artist around at the moment - his films are poetic, light, beautiful, simple, somewhere between dream, documentary and philosophical questions, and Ben Rivers is a really interesting guy. This is a very rare opportunity to talk to him in person, and we are very excited to screen his latest film - and we will show it on beautiful 35mm. Cannot wait.
- Screening of super cult classic Tarkovsky film STALKER on 4 March, 9pm!! This is a seminal film, one of the very important films in the history of cinema. Everyone still struggles to understand it, which only makes it more interesting. Special screening on 35mm! Lush.
- Screening of awesome absurd weird Spanish film about 2 ghosts travelling aimlessly on horse backs in the countryside: FINISTERRAE, Sunday 18 March, 7.30pm! + Skype Interview with the director after the film!!
- Screening of one of the most beautiful films ever: ETERNITY (Thailand) on Sun 25 March, 7.30pm

-------------------------------------- MUSIC: 2 NIGHTS -------------------------------------
>> THU 1 MARCH, MIDNIGHT: 24 HOUR PERFORMACE: 9 Beet Stretch
On Thu 1 March, at midnight (as in Thursday evening) we will be having the music performance 9 Beet Stretch, and it will last for 24 hours!
9 Beet Stretch is Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th symphony stretched to 24 hours, with no pitch distortions by Oslo-based artist Leif Inge.
You can come and go, or stay the whole night and following day immersing in this epic and ethereal deep listening experience. Bring along your sleeping bags…
More info here.
>> SAT 24 MARCH, 9PM - 2.30AM: The Time Is Out Of Joint: Forest Swords, The Caretaker, Pye Corner Audio
Three live performances embrace the concept of Hauntology at the moment we skip an hour to mark the beginning of British Summertime.
Based on the idea that there are numerous unrealized futures deriving from past points in history, Hauntology makes us nostalgic for a future that never was.
Tickets £10, more info here http://www.starandshadow.org.uk/on/gig/420
--------------------------- FILMS: SLOW CINEMA WEEKEND (Thu 8 - Sun 11 March) ------------------------------
The films for that weekend would normally be classified as "artist" films - most of them have not been released in "classical" cinemas. What is very exciting about that weekend, is that the directors will be present for Q&As!
List in the boxes below.
---------------------------- FILMS: SLOW CINEMA WEEKLY SERIES (4 - 29 March) -----------------------------
We will be screening 10 films for the whole month, on the top of the programme above.
These will be awesome films!
List in the boxes below.
For all the films, the cinema will be open at least one hour before the screening, so you can come early and have a drink! Check the page for each film for more detail.
We will be holding discussions with most films: either with directors, film lecturers or film programmers. A big part of the pleasure of watching films is to talk about them, so we thought we should take advantage of this amazing film programme to have discussions!
Also, for many of the screenings, we will have food available - pizza and other things, so check each screening's page for more detail!
