Newcastle University's Americas Research Group is excited to present Another Side of The Americas, in association with the Star and Shadow. This film season is in two parts: the first part was in February 2014, the second in May 2014. February saw three contemporary films from Chile, Mexico and Peru respectively which provided a taster of the exciting current film production of Latin America. May will see three more films from Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada.
The
films that form this season offer an alternative vision of The Americas. These are narratives that no longer adhere to
the imperatives of National Cinema,
but are shaped by both the opportunities and constraints of
transnational funding and production structures. The intimate and
understated stories portrayed in February's films avoid falling into the
trap of exoticising the characters as cinematic others. Instead,
we are impelled to relate to the films on a more personal level.
All films will have an introduction and informal post-film discussion - everyone is welcome to stay!
The Americas Research Group focuses on the vast cultural, social, economic, political, environmental and historical complexities of North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. You can read more about them here
