Inspirational films from the London activist video collective and guests, and the chance to make your own news and screen it on the night. Camp for Climate Action, Smash EDO Arms Factory campaign, Anti-Academies teachers occupation, miscarriages of justice plus campaign speakers, discussion and music. Reel News publicises and shares information on inspirational campaigns and struggles in the UK and worldwide.
We produce a 90-minute bimonthly newsreel with short films for use in union and campaign meetings.
On our first UK tour we will be in Newcastle from noon on the 1st October; tell us about your local campaigns in advance (email reelnews@reelnews.co.uk) and we can either help you do some filming on the day and edit it, or help you edit footage you may have already, ready for screening in the evening.
We'll also be showing films from the latest DVD (out end of September) with discussion, including local speakers from the featured campaigns:
Camp for Climate Action: Coal
Following last year's camp against the proposed third runway at Heathrow, this year's camp targetted Kingsnorth in Kent where Germany company E-on wants to build a coal-fired power station twice the size of the existing one. What transpired was a very successful week of discussions, eco-living and direct action, and an increased involvement from trade unionists - despite the ludicrously large and heavy-handed police presence.
Camp for Climate Action: Agrofuels
Biofuel use at present is very small, but is already responsible for three quarters of the 75% rise in global food prices and up to 100 million more people going hungry. If EU and US targets for biofuel use are met, 60 million people face becoming biofuel refugees. See the brilliant action during the climate camp, growing resistance in Paraguay against GM soya and the truth about this so-called "green solution".
Anti-Academies: Teachers Occupation
Academy schools represent the privatisation of education and the handing over of our schools to a motley crew of hedge fund speculators, venture capitalists and religious fundamentalists. Campaigns are rising up all over the country - this film concentrates on the teachers unions in Wembley, North London, who have prevented the building of an academy next to the stadium by occupying the land earmarked for it.
Special guests
Schmovies, from the direct action network Schnews in Brighton, will be showing the latest installment of the campaign to shut down the local EDO arms factory. The police were desperate to prevent the previous film from being shown anywhere when Schmovies took it on tour earlier this year; suffice it to say they're not going to like this one either!

MOJO Scotland campaign over the numerous miscarriages of justice in our prison system. Prominent MOJO campaigners include Paddy Hill from the Birmingham Six and Gerry Conlan from the Guildford Four. They'll be showing a short film about their work.

The Treatment Rooms are a political artists collective who are doing incredible work with the Black Panthers still held in solitary confinement in the U.S. after 33 years, and with other prisoners on death row. Find out more about their work.

The night will finish off with music from local djs.
Reel News is completely independent and non-aligned. We are completely against sectarianism in all its forms, anti-capitalist in outlook, against the anti-trade union laws and in favour of mass collective action in the workplace and on the streets to change society.
