Peak Oil6.30pm  - Film: The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

Cuba, an isolated island nation, rebuilt its quality of life following the collapse of cheap oil, supplied by the former Soviet Union. This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy.

"A very graphic presentation of how Cubans have adapted to limited energy resources and the continued and strengthened US embargo."

Discussion

The film showing will be followed by a discussion as part of the "Socialism into the 21st Century" speaking tour organised by Rock Around the Blockade, a campaign set up by the Revolutionary Communist Group in solidarity with Cuba. Visiting Cuban, Jesus Garcia, will lead a discussion about socialism in Cuba, with a focus on the environmental achievements. Jesus is an investigator at the Institute of Philosophy, part of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment and delegate of the Municipal Assembly of People's Power. Also participating in the discussion will be experienced activists from the permaculture movement in Britain.

Music!

At 9pm the social will kick off with a Bolivian band playing 'Andean ethno-music', followed by up-and-coming local band The 27 CLUB, who play a mixture of hip hop and funk-rock. The social will be a good opportunity to have more informal discussion with our Cuban comrades and also with a local permaculture expert.
