Bricks and Mortar is a selection of films that focus on urban architecture and planning and seek out hidden, shifting meanings sometimes by destructive means. John Smith’s Blight witnesses homely interiors exposed violently to the elements. Locations between towerblocks preoccupy Karen Mirza and Brad Butler's intense The Space Between whilst Guy Sherwin, known for his mesmerizing expanded cinema works, focus on the dynamic use of space beneath an American freeway. The programme also features Star and Shadow favourite David Leister and a rare 16mm print, brought over from Paris, of Gordon Matta-Clark's breathtaking Conical Intersect In which he carves a building high above a curious paris street.

Bricks and Mortar was compiled from a residency that was part of the Artist's in residence programme at the Scottish Pavilion in the Venice Biennale.
3 Scottish artists were resident in Venice and then completed their experience by a one month residence in Arbroath, Scotland to realise ideas. Mairi Laffety one of these artists in residence, invited Mat Fleming and Debbie Bower, both of the Star and Shadow Cinema to join them for their month in Hospitalfields House, Arbroath, Scotland.
This programme was one of the outcomes (as well as their own work created and in exhibition at the Duncan Jordonston College of Art). It has screened at Dundee Contemporary Arts before coming to the Star and Shadow Cinema.
The residency was developed and delivered through a partnership between Scottish Sculpture Workshop and The Hospitalfield Trust.
The same films were also screened at Dundee Contemporary Arts last month
