Ah, Lubitsch!
Subtle, sharp, sad, romantic and funny - a film fit for the SUNDAY SILVERS! Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan star in this tale of despise for those you know and love for those you don't - whoever they might be...
SOME FACTS ABOUT THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER:
Lubitsch considered this the best picture he ever made in his life!
While waiting for Stewart and Sullavan to be available, Lubitsch filmed Ninotchka (1939). Not bad for something in the meantime!
To make sure that Sullavan’s costumes were stripped of glamour, Lubitsch bought dresses off the rail and bleached them in the sun.
The Shop Around the Corner was remade as the Hanks/Ryan movie, You’ve Got Mail in 1998.
This 35mm celluloid print has been re-released by the BFI.
'The Lubitsch Touch' is a phrase coined to mark his unique style, but no one can say exactly what it means!
