Powell and Pressburger most certainly know how to do romance!  Wendy Hiller is magnificent as the unromantic and stubborn Joan Webster who is out to marry for marriage's sake, but who finds love along the way.

Before its production, Paramount used this script as an example of the perfect screenplay for any of their writers who happened to be stuck.  It has a perfect plot and great dialogue, the acting is subtle and not dramatically exaggerated, and the cinematography is fantastic (reportedly, the cinematographer Erwin Hillier, didn't once use a light meter!)
