Very special night with films from the New York Underground Film Festival, music from the USA and from the UK, pizzas and...Manhattan cocktails. Come along and party!

A very special Saturday night for the New York Underground Film Festival at the Star and Shadow cinema...films, music from both sides of the Atlantic, pizzas made especially for you and surprise Manhattan cocktails!

Films at 7.30pm...

NEW YORK WEIGHTS AND MEASURES – JEM COHEN – 6 MINS VIDEO - 2006
“My film is a simple gathering of New York street footage. It was shot with a spring bound 16mm Bolex and includes footage of the ticker tape parade for astronaut John Glenn.” J Cohen

EVERGREEN – RICHARD TODD 15MINS - FILM – 2005
“Urban nature under siege - a short film reflecting on the act of landscape as portraiture.” R Todd

LIGHT WORK – JENNIFER REEVES – 8 MINS 16MM AND VIDEO - 2006
“Symbols of 20th century science industry medicine and madness are moved in rhythmic molecular forms, morphing frequencies and colourful visual textures." J Reeves

UNDERSCAN – NANCY HOLT – 21MINS – VIDEO – 1974
Holt’s terrain is her Aunt Ethel’s home in New Bedford presented in still images and excerpts from letters. Holt pays particular interest to the her aunt’s story of aging altering the images by underscanning them, compressing time and personal history by using the intrinsic limitations of the tape.

BRAVE NEW YORK – RICHARD SANDLER – 54 MINS - VIDEO - 2004
NYC as it is. Richard Sandler’s film is not the usual confection of haircuts and cutoids that represents most of what we see of the city on the screen. This stuff is raw voices ripped from the streets of the city – the sounds of vision oppression political activism paranoia and the truth. See it as it is.

Followed by Music at 9.30pm...

Party featuring impro band from Brooklyn Talibam! and Chops (Leeds) + DJ’s + Manhattan cocktails and pizza service. Come long and party!

No-Fi, a very good label and gig-organiser based in Newcastle strongly recommends Talibam!:

talibam2"Eclectic, muscular rock/noise-inflected Improv....things fall apart wonderfully...out of sheer exuberance and pure adrenalin pushing the musicians and the music up to and over the edge…energy level worthy of Borbetomagus..spills out in all directions, from demented free noise polka to post-Prog funk chorale...The cumulative effect of it all is pretty mindblowing...Talibam! could well be the most exciting improv outfit you'll hear all year...this is more a point of no return than a point of departure...the view from the cliff top is magnificent…"

And a late night treat at 12.30am...

THE ANT HILL – JAMES FOTOPOULOS – 60MIN VIDEO -2004

“ I was in the forest walking and thinking. And as I was coming upon the stream – all the sounds around me the water running and the birds became very loud and I thought my head was going to explode. Then it all faded away and I was in complete silence. I smelt something burning and the sun light was so bright in my eyes.” James Fotopoulos’ narrative of the world of a merciless cult continues his foray away from film into the possibilities of video with the results more materially degraded than ever.
