Restrepo exposes to our scrutiny the year that Sebastian Junge and Tim Hetherington spent embedded with No 2 Platoon of the 503 Infantry regiment (airborne) on their tour of duty in Afghanistan.
The goal of the regiments deployment was to clear the Korengai Valley of insurgency and to gain the ‘trust ‘ of the locals. The film numbingly and eloquently poses the unspoken question: what are these boys doing in Afghanistan? This screening take place on the eve of the anniversary of Tim Heatherton’s death in Libya last year.
The programme will include extracts from a lecture he gave at the Side cinema in 2009. If you have doubts about the Western involvement in Afghanistan then this film is a powerful statement about the limits of the projection of Western power both moral and cultural.
