A loving and personal introduction into the avant - garde film world by film activist Pip Chodorov.
"In Mr. Chodorov's boyish telling (which begins with a home movie), experimental cinema is open to anyone with the urge to make stuff and the willingness to put aside artistic assumptions and profit" (New York Times)
Free Radicals is a look at the world of experimental filmmaking by one of its greatest celebrants, Pip Chodorov. His personal relationships with filmmakers are well exploited in the film to give a very intimate look at these artists and their creations. The documentary includes Stan Brakhage (his last recorded interview), Robert Breer (who had an excellent retrospective last year at the Baltic), Ken Jacobs, Peter Kubelka, Jonas Mekas, & Micheal Snow amongst others. Though certainly male centric, it is a significant and fascinating documentary.
The film itself contains excerpt and short films in their entirety including Robert Breer's Recreation, Stan Brakhage's Existence is Song and the film that gives the documentary its title: Len Lye's seminal Free Radicals.
Here's what the awesome venue Worm wrote about him, and it sums it up really…
In the world of experimental, avant-garde and hand made film, Pip Chodorov's presence and voice, as facilitator, organizer and standard-bearer cannot be over exaggerated. He's an absolute dynamo. Originator of THE indispensible Frameworks mailing list, founder of Re:Voir distribution and Film Gallery, co-founder of L'Abominable film lab in Paris and asides from all of this, a great, great film maker.
We were lucky enough to have Pip visit and present his films at the Star and Shadow Cinema last year and are delighted to welcome his films to our screen.
