Together with Diabolique, The Wages of Fear (Le Salaire de la Peur) earned Henri-Georges Clouzot the reputation as a "French Hitchcock." In truth, Clouzot's ability to sustain suspense may have even exceeded Hitchcock's.

An early description of globalisation and the exploitation of those without sufficient incomes or the right paperwork. The North American Southern Oil Company recruits four Europeans desperate to escape the company town of Las Piedras. The only way out being to drive trucks laden with jerry-cans of nitroglycerine across treacherous terrain to the site of a burning oil well. Through expository dialogue, tense interactions and flashbacks, we become intimately acquainted with the four drivers who sign up for this death-defying mission: Corsican Yves Montand, Italian Folco Lulli, German Peter Van Eyck, and Frenchman Charles Vanel. Then we watch as they try to achieve their mission and Earn the Wages of Fear.  Based on the novel by Georges Arnaud The Wages of Fear was remade in 1977 by William Friedkin as Sorcerer itself recently re-released to significant acclaim.
