A surreal piece of stop-motion psychedelia, La Planète Sauvage won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival.  Now referenced as a landmark of European animation, it is based on the French novel ‘Oms en Série’ by Stefan Wul, and tells the story of human-like creatures kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants.

Rich in political and social themes, Fantastic Planet is widely regarded as an allegorical comment on the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia.  (The film was crafted over five years at Prague’s Jiri Trnka Studios.)

Featuring a unique and evocative score by Alain Goraguer (an innovative composer and musician who collaborated for many years with Serge Gainsbourg), La Planète Sauvage is an intensely memorable viewing experience.  Expect proggy guitars and synths to set the backdrop for beautiful, imaginative and eerie landscapes,  as artist Roland Topor’s incredible images are gently  burnt onto the brain.

“A prime piece of evidence in the argument that cinema can effectively act as a drug without the need for any external ingestion.”
