On March 11, 2011, the Great Tohoku Earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami that killed tens of thousands and caused the partial meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Traveling through space and time, The Radiant invokes both the historical promise of nuclear energy and the future threat of radiation that converges on the illuminated cities and evacuated villages of Japan. These irradiated citizens and their towns served as a laboratory for the risks of global nuclear power. Commissioned as part of dOCUMENTA (13). Regional Premiere. 2012.
