Set in the largely abandoned town of Yumen in China’s western Gansu province, a once-thriving, oil-rich community in the 1980s has been left depleted and derelict. Yumen takes us through these desolate spaces abandoned by Chinese socialism, in a fragmented narrative of hungry souls, restless youth, a wandering artist and a lonely woman, all searching for human connection and a collective past among the town's crumbling landscape. Shot on 16mm the film has a ghostly quality that pays homage to a disappearing life-world and a fading cinematic medium. English Premiere. 2013.
