Excellent feature film from the legendary John Sayles, an Italian documentary and workshops on how to fight extremism

11.00am - DOCUMENTARY: Porto Marghera - The Last Firebrands (Dir. Manuela Pellarin, 2004, 52 min, Italy)

PortoPorto Marchera tells the story of workers struggling against precarious employment and hazardous working conditions in this booming industrial zone, from the 1950s through to the 70s. Thos active in these struggles speak of their experiences and the role of autonomous assemblies. Through this, the film explores attemptsĀ a new social politics, located both in and beyond the workplace and encompassing issues like squatted housing and cheap food. This in turn challenged the power of union bureaucracies and the hierarchies of traditional industrial struggle.

11.00am - Fighting the fash 1: An Introduction

Fascism hasn't gone away and groups like the NF remain a threat. The BNP too, whilst they might be wearing suits, still peddle filth and division. What's the best way to combat them? A chance ot discuss this with people active in Antifa and the Green Brigades.

1.00pm - FILM - Matewan (Dir. J. Sayles, 1987, 135 min)

MatewanSet in the 1920's West Virginia coalfields, Matewan is based on true events. Starring Chris Cooper, Mary McDonnell and Earl Jones, the film explores a struggle for unionisation, set against company violence, and attempts to create ethnic divisions. Matewan focses on the lives of union organiser Joe Kenehan and miner's widow Elma Radnor, as it moves inexorably towards the final shoot out.

1.00pm - Fighting the Fash 2: A Workshop

Following on from the earlier introduction, an opportunity to put some ideas together about ways forward, including local actions.
