What a belter to open our Losing the Plot Film Club with - Testament of Orpehus stars Jean Cocteau himself in his final film, the third part of his Orphic trilogy (Blood of a Poet, Orphée). He portrays an 18th-century poet who travels through time on a quest for divine wisdom. In a mysterious wasteland, he meets several symbolic phantoms that bring about his death and resurrection. With an eclectic cast that includes Pablo Picasso, Jean-Pierre Leáud, Jean Marais and Yul Brynner, Testament of Orpheus (Le Testament de Orphée) brings full circle the journey Cocteau began in The Blood of a Poet, an exploration of the torturous relationship between the artist and his creations. Full of surreal and symbolic imagery and ideas!
Losing the Plot film club is a new monthly event screening films where conventional film language goes out of the window. Along the same lines as our annual film retreat, this is a space to eat food, watch films and collectively reflect on them. LTP is normally programmed by The Ignorant Curator - it is an experiment in egalitarian spectatorship in so far as the films are chosen unpreviewed by the programmer, which helps the dynamics of the post-screening conversation. This time the Ignorant Curator has been inspired by Radio 4's Antonia Quirke, presenter of the FIlm Programme, who will be IN THE HOUSE enjoying time with us and having a chat afterwards. Come and join in!
Losing the Plot film club begins with a communal meal before the film screening. The meal will be in the Star and Shadow cafe with a simple vegan one-pot and some cake. Those joining us for dinner are asked to book in advance to ensure enough food is prepared.
Food in the cafe from 6.30-7.30pm.
Screening at 7.30pm.
