Rome, Open City (Roma città aperta) is a landmark of Italian Neorealism and launched the career of Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini and Anna Magnani, gaining them international acclaim. Made in extraordinarily straitened circumstances immediately after the liberation of Rome, the film follows engineer Giorgio (Marcello Pagliero) in his attempts to evade the nazi-fascist forces, by seeking help from Pina (Anna Magnani), fiancée of a fellow member of the underground resistance, and Don Pietro (Aldo Fabrizi), the priest due to oversee her marriage. Since its release, Roma città aperta has become an iconic anti-fascist film and has shaped Italian collective political consciousness.
