An entertaining star-studded parody of a horror movie in which Depp takes a dead-pan lead in a fairly predictable plot (which, of course, should not be taken seriously). The comedy arises from the intense outlandish characters, their quirky interaction, the anachronistic culture clash and the Burton-esque setting. No opportunity is missed for a visual gag or cliched one-liner. The movie, as a vehicle for this, is a remake of a 1970s horror movie that was itself based on a cult 1960s American Gothic soap opera.
Barnabas Collins is the scion of a wealthy east coast fishery dynasty in 18th Century America. When he falls in love with Josette, his jilted ex-girlfriend (Angelique) is infuriated. She uses her knowledge of witchcraft to rid herself of the competition and to curse Barnabas to become a vampire. When he continues to reject her, she imprisons him in a coffin and buries him alive. After two hundred years he finally escapes imprisonment and returns to the family home. There he finds the family, its home and its enterprise in a state of decay. He resolves to restore the family to health, wealth and happiness, but he has not reckoned on the machinations of Angelique.
