The North East's first event for the boardgame Root!

>> What's the event?

6 hours dedicated to your (my) favourite boardgame. We'll have teaching tables for new players, casual games, and, if there's enough competitive interest, we'll run a tournament or exhibition game.

>> Who's it for?

  • Do you like playing Root?
  • Have you heard of the game but not played it much (or at all)?
  • Do you play regularly and competitively?

If you answered yes to any of those then this is the event for you! The Star and Shadow is a great venue and everyone's welcome.

>> Sign me up!

Tickets are £3 and available via TicketSource here. Spaces will be limited so make sure you book soon.
There's a couple of questions as you book your ticket so you can tell us what kind of games you're looking for!

Look forward to seeing you there :-)

>> What is Root?

If you've never heard of Root before, this review gives a good summary:

The Root board game brings us unhindered woodland warfare, nature red in tooth and claw... and broadswords. And crossbows. Don't let the adorable - and it is adorable - appearance deceive you; this is as cutthroat an experience as any other competitive wargame, and in the end, only side can claim victory. It'll take time to get your head around, but for fans of grand strategy, it's one of the best board games out there.

The New York Times listed it as one of their Top 4 strategy games for 2023.

This deep strategy is expertly paired with gorgeous, playful art that reinforces the fiction of the war-torn world, which feels like a gritty remake of the Redwall books.

It's hard to give a quick summary of the game but it's fun, strategic and occasionally chaotic. No two games are ever the same and, in my experience, it gets better the more you play. It's not always the easiest game to get your head round straight away, but very worth it when you do.
