Unable to work in Hollywood, Melvin Van Peebles removed himself to Paris joining a diaspora of disaffected Black artists. His edgy angsty romantic first feature could never have been made in America. Van Peebles' film is an exploration of the psychology of an interracial relationship, as well as a commentary on France’s contradictory attitudes about race. It's playful sarcastic and stingingly subversive by turns – check it out.
