The Spy in Black Michael Powell (UK; 1939; U) Conrad Weidt, Valerie Hobson; script by Emeric Pressburger
The Spy in Black represents the first collaboration of Powell and Pressburger, who were brought together by Alexander Korda. Darkness foreboding and regret rather than any sense of jingoistic propaganda dominate this spy story produced on the cusp of World War ll. Shot with stunning fluidity in the highlands of Scotland and on the Orkney Islands Powell effortlessly produces more memorable shots and scenes than can be found in many a contemporary film. A gem of a movie - not to be missed particularly by admirers of Powell and Pressburger.
