Dive into the erotic, visual excess of Ken Russell's 1969 cinematic landmark. Set against the backdrop of a stifling 1920s mining town, sisters Ursula (Jennie Linden) and Gudrun (Glenda Jackson) defy social convention to seek radical new experiences of intimacy.

The film follows two volatile pairs: Ursula seeks a transcendent spiritual balance with the idealistic Rupert (Alan Bates), while Gudrun enters a brutal, magnetic power struggle with the industrial heir Gerald (Oliver Reed). From its famously transgressive nude wrestling scene to its haunting, snow-swept finale in the Alps, Women in Love captures a fever dream of human desire.

The local connection: Some of this film was short in the north east and filming locations include North Shields, Bedlington Colliery and Gateshead. Pupils from local schools were recruited as extras for crowd scenes. (Charles Bell, FB)
