When a young boy's family is killed by the mob, their tough neighbour Gloria becomes his reluctant guardian as the pair go on the run in New York. Gena Rowlands gives a subtle yet powerful performance as Gloria in this classic John Cassavettes modern film noir.
The film shows New York in all its 1980's grittiness - dangerous streets and decrepit buildings - creating a tough and compelling atmosphere. Rowlands is dynamite as the gun toting, post-menopausal 'broad' who's tired of the mob throwing their weight around and decides to side with and protect the little guy. She's pithy, she's pissed off, she's perfection.
