This Halloween, TV ON THE BIG SCREEN ventures into one of the strangest and most unsettling corners of British television with a special screening of CHILDREN OF THE STONES.

First broadcast in 1977, CHILDREN OF THE STONES follows astrophysicist Adam Brake and his son Matthew as they arrive in the small village of Milbury, an apparently idyllic place surrounded by an ancient stone circle. But something is very wrong. The villagers are unnervingly cheerful, strange forces seem to emanate from the stones, and anyone who asks too many questions risks becoming one of the “happy ones”.

Filmed among the real standing stones of Avebury, the seven-part series mixes folk horror, science fiction, ancient mythology and the supernatural into a uniquely eerie piece of British television. Originally made for children, its sinister atmosphere, haunting choral music and increasingly bizarre story have ensured that CHILDREN OF THE STONES has remained lodged in viewers’ nightmares for nearly 50 years.

Frequently cited as one of the greatest British children’s television dramas ever made, it has become a cult classic and a landmark of what is now often called hauntological or folk-horror television.
