Newcastle record label Signals presents Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) with a live original score performed by North East producer Burning Pyre.
Dreyer’s silent classic depicts the trial of Joan of Arc through intense close-ups and minimal staging, focusing on her emotional and psychological state during interrogation and execution.
Dreyer’s film is a landmark of silent cinema: an unflinching, intimate portrayal of Joan’s trial, built almost entirely from piercing close-ups and raw emotional performance. Renowned for its expressive cinematography and the unforgettable performance of Renée Jeanne Falconetti, it remains one of the most powerful works in film history.
Burning Pyre is Newcastle producer Chris Owen. Chris co-runs the Eastern Nurseries imprint and has a fine catalogue of releases with the likes of Opal Tapes and Perfect Aesthetics. Fresh off the release of his album, Imago, on Glasgow’s co:clear label and his recent appearance at Star & Shadow with Polypores and Public Footpath, Hhe'll be responding to the film with live electronic score performed in real time and created specifically for the screening.
