This film is both a celebration of, and a tribute to, a great revolutionary whose actions and those of his comrades, changed the course of history forever.
Tsietsi Mashinini was the leader of the Soweto student uprising, the apartheid government’s most wanted man in 1976 and, forced into exile, he died under mysterious circumstances, never to witness the fruits of freedom in his homeland.

Portia Rankoane is a director, photographer and poet who is as easily at home making avant-garde artist film as working in the documentary tradition. Her short A Red Ribbon Around My House, won numerous awards for its portrayal of a HIV positive mother and her daughter. She brings with her first hand experience of Soweto during the period of history dealt with in the film.

Meet the filmmaker: Portia Rankoane will be present for an exclusive director’s Q&A, led by Andy Jones (local director of ‘As Old As My Tongue’, which screened alongside Tsietsi in Mozambique).
After the screening DJ Snailcrusher will be sessioning South African vibes in the S&S bar until late, from the classics of Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masakela to the new conscious hip hop of the Eastern Cape.
