Lez Pop returns for a mini edition to celebrate what cultural critics have recently dubbed a "Lesbian Renaissance".
Chappell Roan's rise to global fame feels like a victory for a lot of us. Her break-out single Good Luck, Babe! is a sweeping anthem about the predicament of compulsory heterosexuality.
Chappell is certainly not the first pop artist to sing about women loving women. For over a decade, artists like Hayley Kiyoko (the one and only Lesbian Jesus), Kehlani, Janelle Monáe, Tegan and Sara, Syd, FLETCHER and so many others have been quenching our thirst for representation. And of course, there are other iconic artists who have paved the way: k.d. lang, Brandi Carlile, Melissa Etheridge, Joan Armatrading, Tracy Chapman... all the way back to Bessie Smith.
Lesbians have certainly been in cinema too since the beginning, but 2023 and 2024 have seen the insurgence of high-grossing films with a lesbian storyline that doesn't end up in tragedy or isn't set in the Victorian age: Bottoms, Drive Away Dolls, Love Lies Bleeding, Mean Girls - even Barbie had a lot of lesbian subtext.
On the small screen, BBC's I Kissed A Girl featured a group of young queer women searching for love. Amidst the top-notch drama, viewers engaged with contemporary lesbian culture while gaining an insight into queer women's struggles today.
Music, Film, TV, Videogames, Books, Sports... Lez Pop Renaissance is the perfect way to celebrate our recent accomplishments while manifesting a prosperous future for lesbian pop culture.
The venue is wheelchair accessible and has got accessible and gender-neutral toilets.
This event is open to everyone (18+) regardless of how they identify.
