To mark the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, which helped galvanise South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, we present the 1992 musical drama Sarafina!

Originally based on the legendary Mbongeni Ngema 1987 musical of the same name, Sarafina! presents experiences of loss, resistance, and connection through the lives of students involved in the Uprising.

During a time when Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, a student named Sarafina and her peers are inspired by their history teacher, Mary Masombuka (played by Whoopi Goldberg), to rise up against the apartheid regime.

The cast and soundtrack also feature the phenomenal “Mama Africa,” Miriam Makeba, as Sarafina’s mother, existing in the shadows of the oppressive apartheid system.

In solidarity, the film is being shown during the week of the Newcastle “UBUNTU” – I Am Because You Are / Race for Peace event.
